    Scope and Contents

    The Masajiro and Sugi Kotake Family Papers (circa 1914-May 23, 1955) contains 76.1 megabytes of digitized material related to the Kotake family. Digitized items include Imperial Japanese government passports, Medical Board examiners documents and cards, and a naturalization certificate.

    Biographical / Historical

    Sugi Kotake (nee Imaizumi) was born in October 1902 in Fukuoka-Jen, Japan. She arrived in the United States in 1924, shortly after marrying Masajuro Frank Kotake in May 1924. Masajuro was born in December 1898 in Fukuoka-Ken, Japan in December 1898. During World War II, they were incarcerated at the Santa Anita Racetrack, Rowher, and Tule Lake incarceration camps. They had one child together, William Tetsutaro Kotake. Masajiro worked as a farmer, while Sugi worked as a midwife. Masajiro died in 1986, and Sugi died ten years later in 1996.
