    Scope and Content of Collection

    Papers of Fred B. Phleger (1909-1993), an oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who was known for his research in the ecology and paleoecology of marine foraminifera, and who helped establish the field of paleoceanography. The collection includes correspondence, writings, research notes and data, slides, photographs, and films.
    The image documentation is particularly focused on Baja California coastline, lagoon, and marsh ecology, including aerial footage. Many of the photographs and films taken in Baja date from 1956 through the early 1960s. There are a few black and white photo albums showing the coastal areas where Phleger took his samples and observations, and many color slides.
    Arranged in six series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL, 2) CORRESPONDENCE, 3) RESEARCH, 4) WRITINGS, 5) PHOTOGRAPHS, and 6) FILMS.

    Biography

    Fred B. Phleger (1909-1993) was a professor emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California, San Diego), where he was a pioneer in the ecology and paleoecology of foraminiferan protists.
