Background
The collection comprises 35 albumen photographs from a disbound album of views of Chile, primarily of Santiago, but also including
images of Valparaíso
and rural subjects. The photographs are by an unknown maker and were likely taken in the 1880s. The 23 views of Santiago include
the central plaza, the
House of Congress, the the Teatró Municipal, two views of the Alameda, the Quinta Normal, two views of Santa Lucia Hill, three
images of the Recoleta
church and monastery, and La Caridad. Views of private residences include those identifed as belonging to a Señora Cousiño
(four views, external and
internal; also included are two views of the Cousiño estate in Lota) and a Señor Concha (two views). One image depicts a Corpus
Christi procession in
the streets of Santiago.
