Abstract: The collection contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, oral history audiotapes and transcripts, and other research
materials accumulated by author and wine historian William F. Heintz. The materials focus on the history of wine and wineries
in Southern California, particularly in the areas of Temecula and Rancho Cucamonga.
The processing of this collection and the creation of this finding aid was funded by the generous support of the National

William F. Heintz donated the collection to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 2000 and 2002.
William Heintz, an author and wine historian, was born on February 9, 1933 in Rudyard, Montana. His parents were Carl and
Marguerite Heintz.
Heintz attended college in Helena, Montana but later moved to California. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism at
San Francisco State University and later received a master's degree in history at Sonoma State University.
Heintz wrote about wine history in books and various publications. His books on wine history include
California's Napa Valley: One Hundred and Sixty Years of Wine Making and
Temecula: A Grape and Wine History. His research topics included studying the history of wine and viticulture in the Temecula Valley in California. He also
conducted research on the origin date of Thomas Vineyards in Cucamonga and its claim of being "California's Oldest Winery."
Heintz had just turned 79 when he died on February 10, 2012.
The collection contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, oral history audiotapes and transcripts, and other research
materials relating to the history of wine and wineries in Southern California, particularly in the areas of Temecula and Rancho
Cucamonga. There are drafts of Heintz's book,
Temecula: A Grape and Wine History and research materials relating to the book, including photocopies of articles from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Heintz
also conducted research for a petition to designate a viticultural area named "Temecula."
The oral history interviews that Heintz conducted address wine and viticultural history in Southern California, particularly
in the Temecula area. For example, Philo Biane, the former president of Brookside Winery in Guasti, discusses the Italian
Vineyard Company and the concept behind Fruit Industries, which made grape concentrate during Prohibition. Several interviews
also address the historical vineyards in the Temecula area.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
