Description
This collection contains correspondence written by several authors to the Schwanke family during the First World War. Much of the correspondence is from or concerning Pvt. Charles Schwanke, USA, who served with the 104th Infantry Regiment of the 26th Infantry Division.
Background
Private Charles Schwanke, United States Army (b. 11/27/1889) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was 27 when he filled out his draft registration card for the First World War. Records show that Schwanke served with Company K of the 104th Infantry in France. He sailed home from Brest, France on the USS Mount Vernon in March of 1919 and arrived in Boston on April 4, 1919.
