Photographs have been individually sleeved in Mylar. Newspaper clippings have been photocopied
onto permanent durable paper. Audiotapes have not peen played to determine condition and
content, and may need to be re-mastered.

Freedman was born on August 17, 1921 in Lafayette, Indiana; BA, Harvard University, 1947; MD, Yale University, 1951; as recipient
of a Career Investigator Award, he studied the effects of LSD at the National Institute of Mental Health (1957-58); assistant
professor (1958-61), associate professor (1961-64), and professor of psychiatry (1964-66), Yale University; became professor
and chair of the psychiatry department at the University of Chicago in 1966; became Judson Braun Professor of Psychiatry and
Pharmacology at UCLA in 1983; served as acting chairman of the UCLA department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, and
acting director of the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, 1989-91; became chief editor of the American Medical Association's
Archives of General Psychiatry in 1970; served as president of the American Association of Chairmen of Departments of Psychiatry
(1972-73), the Association of Research in Nervous and Mental Disease (1974), the American Psychiatric Association (1981-82),
and the Society of Biological Psychiatry (1985-86); chaired or served on many federal committees; won several awards including
the Award for Distinguished Achievement in Modern Medicine (1973), co-authored The theory and practice of psychiatry (with
Frederick C. Redlich, 1966); Freedman died on June 3, 1993 in Los Angeles.
Collection consists of correspondence, class syllabi, lectures, notes, grant applications, laboratory notebooks and data,
manuscripts and typescripts of publications, lectures, speeches, interviews, publications, notes of committee meetings and
draft reports, patient case notes and correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, awards, photographs, and audiotapes.
