Description
Financial records of the Coronado Railroad Company.
Background
The Coronado Railroad dates from 1886. It ran from San Diego around the Bay, and up the Silver Strand peninsula to Coronado. The railroad did a brisk business while the Southern California building boom of the 1880s lasted, but then faced a decline in revenues. Originally a steam railroad, the Coronado Railroad was electrified in 1893. In 1909 the Coronado Railroad and the National City and Otay consolidated to form the San Diego Southern Railroad, which in turn became part of the San Diego and Arizona Railway.
