Description
This scrapbook contains newspaper articles, menus, artwork and photographs documenting the Sticky Wicket café in Aptos, CA.
Background
The Sticky Wicket café was first opened on Cathcart Street, Santa Cruz on May 6, 1959 by Victor and Sidney Jackson Jowers. For the first couple of years it existed as the only bohemian coffee house in town. But due to location restrictions, the Jowers moved the Sticky Wicket to Mar Vista Drive, Aptos in 1961 where the café thrived. They established the coffee house as a place to have a cup of coffee, eat "exotic" foods, play a game of chess, and listen to nightly folk music. They added frequently changing art shows, free Thursday evening chamber music concerts and eventually a summer program of light opera at the New Vic Theatre.
