    Scope and Contents

    This collection contains the papers of director John Stahl (1886-1950). Materials include approximately 20 screenplays; correspondence, telegrams, and memos; publicity clippings and reviews of many of Stahl's films; books (mostly novels); synopses and treatments; approximately 50 photographs and stills. Also included are sketchbooks from "Immortal Sergeant" (1943) and "The Keys of the Kingdom" (1944), a research book for "Parnell" (1937), and a still book from "Leave Her to Heaven" (1945). Among the screenplays are "The Lady Surrenders" (1930), "Strictly Dishonorable" (1931), "Back Street" (1932), "Imitation of Life" (1934), "Magnificent Obsession" (1935), "Parnell" (1937), "The Foxes of Harrow" (1947), and "Father was a Fullback" (1949).

    Biographical / Historical

    John Stahl (1886-1950) was an American film director and producer. He was part of the team that founded MGM Studios and one of the founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His films include "Leave Her to Heaven" (1945), "Memory Lane" (1926), "Husbands and Lovers" (1924), and "Wives of Men" (1918).
