    Scope and Content of Collection

The Trevor Hailey papers provide a snapshot of the life of one of San Francisco’s iconic residents, the unofficial historian of the city’s Castro District. Hailey, born Dorothy Evelyn Fondren, grew up in Mississipi, joined the Navy and, in 1972, was transferred to the Naval Hospital in Oakland, where she worked as a nurse. From 1989-1995, Hailey led her popular “Cruisin’ the Castro” walking tours through her neighborhood, regaling thousands with tales of LGBT history and personal anecdotes. The bulk of the collection contains materials related to the tours, including a scrapbook, fan mail, flyers, notes for the tour, photographs, local and foreign newsclippings and artifacts. There is also personal correspondence, e-mails and photographs; materials related to her career as a Navy nurse, ranging from photographs that date back to at least 1968 to appreciations upon her retirement in 1995; datebooks; an article on “Lesbian San Francisco” by Hailey; and ephemera from LGBT events that she collected over the years. Personal mail has not been separated from fan mail and photos have not been sorted. GSSO Linked Terms: http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/GSSO_000381
