Abstract:
19 letters and 11 envelopes, mostly written by Nathan S. Stanwood in Sacramento to Nancy Delano in Strong, ME. Another letter
is to Stanwood from a woman named Abby (?) in Augusta, ME, and also included is a letter from Jasper S. Whiting in Stockton
to California State Surveyor Seneca H. Marlette. It is not clear what connection this letter has, if any, with the rest even
though it was written during the same period.

Note:
Seneca H. Marlette was born in Syracuse, NY on January 18, 1824, earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer University,
and worked as a civil engineer for the New York and Erie Railroad until 1849. After coming to California he was elected Calaveras
County Surveyor in 1852, and served as Surveyor General of California in 1854-55. Marlette died in Glendale, CA on August
24, 1911.
