Abstract: This collection consists of primary and secondary source materials collected by David Talbot over the course of his research for his book, Season of the Witch. Of note are primary source materials in the form of interviews and transcripts with many notable individuals who lived and participated in the cultural turbulence of 1960s through 1970s San Francisco, such as Art Agnos, Cleve Jones, and Dianne Feinstein. David Talbot is an American journalist, author, activist and independent historian. He founded the pioneering online news site Salon, which he oversaw for its first ten years, from 1995 to 2005. He was also an editor at the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner before resuming a career as an author and has been published in the New Yorker, Time, the Guardian, the Los Angeles Times and many other publications.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

Publication Rights

All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items. Donor retains copyright.

Conservation Note

During processing, the entire collection was re-foldered and re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes. Some metal staples remain.

Biography

David Talbot was born on September 22, 1951, in Los Angeles, California. He is an American journalist, author, activist and independent historian. Talbot is known for his books about the hidden history of U.S. power and the liberal movements for change in America, as well as his public advocacy. He founded the pioneering online news site Salon, which he oversaw for its first ten years, from 1995 to 2005. He was an editor at the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner before resuming a career as an author and has been published in the New Yorker, Time, the Guardian, the Los Angeles Times and many other publications. In addition to his work as an independent historian, Talbot has been deeply engaged in political activism, especially in his hometown of San Francisco.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of primary and secondary source materials collected by David Talbot over the course of his research for his book, Season of the Witch. Of note are primary source materials in the form of interviews and transcripts with many notable individuals who lived and participated in the cultural turbulence of 1960s through 1970s San Francisco, such as Art Agnos, Cleve Jones, and Dianne Feinstein. This collection is otherwise comprised of secondary source materials in the form of news clippings, photocopies, and other notes compiled by Talbot for his book.
