This collection consists of letters, newspaper review clippings, and playbills sent from theatre producer Lucille Lortel to
her friend, actress Victoria Horne Oakie.
Lucille Lortel (1900-1999) was an American actress, artistic director, and theatre producer. Known as "The Queen of Off-Broadway"
Lortel studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1920 and traveled to Berlin to study with Max Reinhart,
she made her Broadway debut in 1925 in a production of
Caesar and Cleopatra. She then founded The White Barn Theatre in 1947 after her husband, Louis Schweitzer, pushed her to retire from acting in
1939. The theatre, located on her property in Norwalk, Connecticut, premiered numerous plays and ran many Off-Broadway shows.
Lortel produced or co-produced nearly 500 plays throughout her career.
