Biography/Administrative History
Ruby Johnson Swartzlow, born in Wisconsin, received her M.A. degree in American History from the University of Missouri.
She married her husband, Carl Swartzlow, in 1925 and a few years later the couple moved to California where Carl became a
park naturalist at Lassen Volcanic National Park. Ruby began research on Peter Lassen during this time. The couple moved
to Paradise, California in 1955 after Carl retired from the park service. Ruby began to write a book on Peter Lassen in the
1960s while also teaching a course on Northern California history in the Adult Education Department at Paradise High School.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection of Ruby Swartzlow’s papers include a variety of items, most regarding her research on Peter Lassen and the
publication of her book entitled, “Lassen: His Life and Legacy.” Included are her publications in various journals, personal
and business correspondence, research notes, photographs, books, travel brochures and newspaper articles. Also included are
publication proofs and a published copy of her book.
