Historical Note

Medical Education for South African Blacks (MESAB) was a nonprofit founded by Herbert and Joy Kaiser. It operated from 1985 to 2007 and supported the medical education of black South Africans. Herbert and Joy both attended Swarthmore College, graduating in 1949 and 1951, respectively, and went on to work in Foreign Service before founding MESAB. They were awarded honorary doctor of science degrees by Swarthmore in 2004.
